چکیده

It has been suggested that secondary CMB anisotropies generated by neutral lithium could open a new observational window into the universe around the redshift z ∼ 400, and permit a determination of the primordial lithium abundance. The effect is due to resonant scattering in the allowed Li i doublet (2s 2S1/2 − 2p 2P1/2,3/2), so its observability depends on the formation history of neutral lithium. Here we show that the ultraviolet photons produced during hydrogen recombination are sufficient to keep lithium in the Li ii ionization stage in the relevant redshift range and suppress the neutral fraction by ∼ 3 orders of magnitude from previous calculations, making the lithium signature unobservable.

Probing the Universe After Cosmological Recombination Through the Effect of Neutral Lithium on the Microwave Background Anisotropies

I show that neutral lithium couples strongly to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) in the redshift interval z = 500–1000 through its 6708Å resonant transition. After lithium recombination at z ∼ 500, the resulting drag force on the entire gas is not much lower than that provided by Thomson scattering of the residual electrons, despite the exceedingly low abundance of lithium atoms. At observ...

Reionization of Hydrogen and Helium by Early Stars and Quasars

We compute the reionization histories of hydrogen and helium due to the ionizing radiation fields produced by stars and quasars. For the quasars we use a model based on halo-merger rates that reproduces all known properties of the quasar luminosity function at high redshifts. The less constrained properties of the ionizing radiation produced by stars are modeled with two free parameters: (i) a ...

Reionization of the Intergalactic Medium and its Effect on the CMB

The bulk of the hydrogen in the universe transformed from neutral to ionized somewhere in the redshift interval 5 <∼ z <∼ 40, most likely due to ionizing photons produced by an early generation of stars or mini–quasars. The resulting free electrons, interacting with the CMB photons via Thomson-scattering, are a mixed blessing, providing both a probe of the epoch of the first stars and a contami...

Lyman- transfer in primordial hydrogen recombination

Cosmological constraints from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies rely on accurate theoretical calculations of the cosmic recombination history. Recent work has emphasized the importance of radiative transfer calculations due to the high optical depth in the H I Lyman lines. Transfer in the Ly line is dominated by true emission and absorption, Hubble expansion, and resonant scatt...

Comment on ‘Recombination induced softening and reheating of the cosmic plasma’

Leung, Chan & Chu (2004) claimed that a previously neglected reheating effect makes a small but noticeable change to the process of cosmological recombination. We revisit this effect by considering a system consisting of both radiation and ionizing gas under adiabatic expansion. In the thermal equilibrium limit, due to the huge radiation background, only a fraction about 10 of the heat released...
